Holy Ascension Cathedral

One of the pearls of Murom. Standing at the intersection of the main streets of the city, the cathedral cannot fail to attract the attention of local residents and tourists. The cathedral was built in the 18th century, but at the beginning of the 20th century the temple was closed, the domes and crosses were removed, and a school was founded in the building itself. Now the cathedral has been restored, it is a white-stone five-domed building.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

The cathedral was founded in the 17th century by the merchant Tarasiy Borisov. Initially, the five-domed Trinity Church was built with gilded wrought-iron crosses. Later, the Kazan Church with a bell tower was completed. In Soviet times, the building was equipped for archives, then for workshops. In the 70s of the XX century, the cathedral became a museum, and later the monastery became active again. Tourists come here to venerate the relics of the patrons of the family and marriage, Peter and Fevronia.

Temple of the Presentation of the Lord

Located in the west of Murom, founded in the 16th century. Previously, there was a Dmitrievskaya church on this site. The initiator of the construction of the Sretenskaya Church was the merchant Ivan Zvorykin. The facade of the building is executed in the classical style, the church itself consists of the main building, a refectory, a bell tower and two aisles. In Soviet times, the building of the temple was converted into a house of culture, and then used to store flax. By 1934, the building was practically destroyed; in 1997, the restoration of the temple and its subsequent opening began.

Assumption Church

The first mention was made in 1574, and at the end of the 18th century, a stone church was built at the expense of the merchant Likhonin. Over the years, the church has been rebuilt several times. By the beginning of the 20th century, the church was destroyed due to ball lightning, so it was decided to dismantle and rebuild it. In 1923 the church was closed, until 1940 only the side chapel functioned. But it was then abolished. The restoration of the church began only in 1999.

Blagoveshchensky cathedral

A wooden church of the Annunciation was originally built in the 12th century. The monastery in its place was founded in the 16th century by order of Ivan the Terrible. The old wooden church was dismantled, and Moscow architects built a new Cathedral of the Annunciation out of stone. The monastery survived many trials - there were raids by the Polish-Lithuanian troops, as well as repeated fires. In Soviet times, the temple was closed for a long time, but during the time of perestroika it was restored.

Temple of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God

It was erected in 1804 on the site of an old church that was burnt down. The construction was financially provided by the local merchant Elin. 28 years later, the church was supplemented with a bell tower, and later - a refectory and a side-altar. After the October Revolution, it was decided to withdraw all the values ​​of the church, and the hall was given over to exhibitions and performances of the academic choir. In 1995, the church caught fire from a lightning strike, later they began to restore it. Work on the restoration of the temple continues to this day.

Transfiguration Cathedral

One of the oldest buildings in Murom, founded in the XI century. The monastery was built on the site where Prince Gleb lived earlier. In the 16th century, a new church was built by order of Ivan the Terrible. He donated books, icons, vestments for priests here. In the 18th century, the first religious school was founded here, which is still operating today. In 1918, the cathedral was closed, the property was plundered, and in the building itself there were workshops of a local factory and a military unit. Since 1995, the cathedral has been restored year after year.

Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ

The first mention of it dates back to the 16th century. But the buildings of the 17th century have survived to us - this is the church itself, the refectory, the Vvedenskaya church with a bell tower and a covered gallery. The Holy Resurrection Convent, where the cathedral was built, functioned until the 18th century, but then it was abolished by order of Catherine II. In Soviet times, it was completely closed, and the building was used as a warehouse. Today the monastery functions as before. There is a holy spring near the monastery, which was named in honor of Peter and Fevronia of Murom.

Nicholas Embankment Church

It was founded in 1700. Locals call it "Nikola Mokryi", as during the flood the Oka spills up to the walls of the church. The facade of the building is made in the Baroque style and is painted in bright yellow. The church stands out for its round arches and windows. There is a refectory and a bell tower next to the building. In Soviet times, the temple was closed, it was opened only in 1991.

Temple of Cosmas and Damian

One of the special churches was built in the 16th century right on the spot where Ivan the Terrible stayed during his trip to Kazan. This place is shrouded in legends: one legend says that the church got its name in honor of two local brothers-blacksmiths. They helped Ivan the Terrible to conquer Kazan and died during the battle. The temple itself is made of white stone and has a hipped roof. Before that, there was an old dome that collapsed in the 19th century. The new one was built only in 2009.

Church of St. Andrew the First-Called

One of the newest temples in Murom. Construction began in 2003. Construction took 6 years, and the temple was lit in 2009. The one-domed temple is made of bricks and has a four-sided bell tower. Until 2010, the temple was attributed to the temple of Elijah Muromets, but later there was a re-registration. From now on, the main temple is Andreevsky.

Holy Cross Church

The church is located on the left bank of the Oka. For a long time, the monastery functioned as a parish church. At the end of the 18th century, at the expense of the merchant Antonov, the building was rebuilt into a stone church. The church had two side-chapels and a refectory, which was expanded in the 19th century. Until 1929, services were held here, the next year the temple was destroyed. In 1998, a cross was erected on the site of that temple, and in 2009 a new temple was laid, which functions to this day.

Church of Seraphim of Sarov

It was built at the beginning of the XXI century. The opening took place in 2005. In the temple there is an image of Seraphim of Sarov, who was canonized in 1903. It is a stone one-domed building with a high foundation. There is a charitable dining room at the temple.

Temple of Guria, Samon and Aviv

Founded in 1844. Tradition says that at a time of high mortality from plague and cholera, a resident of Murom, Guriy Sentsov, made a vow to the Lord. He promised that he would build a temple if the Lord saved his family from these diseases. God heard Guria's prayers, none of his family got sick. This is how this temple appeared in honor of Saints Guria, Samon and Aviv. It is a brick single-domed building that was closed during the revolution. The temple began to function again in 1992.

Church of Elijah Muromets at Verbovskoe cemetery

Built in 1998 at the Verbovskoye cemetery. This is a modern brick church in the Novgorod style.The building has flat and wide facades without any decoration. There is a quadrangular bell tower above the western entrance. The church is assigned to the church of St. Andrew the First-Called.
